Unveiling the Pharisäer Kaffee: A Playful Twist on Coffee Culture in Germany

Aggiornato il: 24 ago 2023

Discover the Whipped Cream Deception and Delight in Every Sip

Continuing our journey through different ways of enjoying coffee around the world, we step into a bar in Germany to try a Pharisäer Kaffee.

At first glance, it may appear to be a simple coffee with cream, but there's something more to it!

The story behind this recipe is quite amusing, provided you have a sense of humor! It seems that in the early 1900s, in northern Germany, a Protestant preacher named Gustav Beyer would take every opportunity to reprimand his fellow villagers for what he believed was their excessive consumption of alcohol.

During a village festival, all the residents decided to play a prank on the pastor by serving him a cup of coffee with whipped cream, while adding rum to everyone else's. However, Gustav noticed the alcohol smell emanating from the other cups and exclaimed, "Ihr Pharisäer!" (You Pharisees, referring to a biblical reference). In essence, the pastor unknowingly gave rise to the name of the beverage created to deceive him!

HOW TO PREPARE?

Ingredients:

  • 80 ml of coffee

  • 2 teaspoons of sugar

  • 40 ml of rum

  • 2 tablespoons of whipped cream

  • ½ teaspoon of cocoa powder

The process:

  • Prepare a cup of coffee and pour it into a large mug.

  • Sweeten the coffee to your liking with sugar.

  • Add the rum and stir (this step is optional as you can also serve the rum separately).

  • Top it off with whipped cream and give it a generous dusting of cocoa.
